The sun is shining.
This comic strip may look graphic but for those in the know, it is just Marzanna. School kids make a Marzanna effigy and throw it in the river on the first day of spring. Sometimes they burn it or toss it in the river. Some people burn it and toss it into the river. It’s a kind of farewell to winter and hello to spring. I saw the kids going out to the river on the first day of spring. Their Marzanna’s were adorable – a cross between a ragdoll and a scarecrow. And the look on the kids’ faces – priceless. They were so excited to go to the river. One teacher was dressed up as a flower. The kids were wearing snowsuits. The older kids have their fun too and as I have been told after drowning Marzanna, older kids consider the 1st day of spring as a great day to cut school. Halloween doesn’t seem so bad now does it?

April 11, 2013 at 2:34 pmThe most funny in your post are the pictures:)When i was a child 1st day of spring was for me a great day -not because of fact the Marzanna – like as you wrote- it was some kind of free day from school. Marzanna it was only symbol for me -but those times springs are always comes…..

April 11, 2013 at 7:01 pmExactly, spring always came more or less on time. It's not fair – it snowed on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. But today was sunnier than yesterday and all the joggers are out.The pictures are thanks to some mad googling skills 😉 And welcome BasiaB 🙂

April 12, 2013 at 5:00 pmHabits with Marzanna are the only thing which christianizm couldn't change or adapt in some way. They, of course, tried. Idea of forbidding it was ignored, idea of throwing a doll of some terater from Bible from windows of churches too…So it's the only habit.I remember that we've had a special płace to burn it in preschool:) it was always nice.Nina

And don't forget, it's the devil's candy.Nina – You are right. It's like Andrzejki. Better to accept it than to fight it. Do you know the saying, \”dress for the job you want, not the job you have\”? I've decided to dress for the weather I want, not the weather I have. OK, today I am as colorful as Marzanna, but I am trying to evoke good weather.
